Western Caribbean Cruise 2008

We had so much fun on our cruise! We flew down to Ft. Lauderdale and spent the night then went to the Port of Miami to board our cruise ship the Carnival Victory! We took a tour of our ship so we would know where all the fun things to do on board were then went to eat. We ate a lot on this cruise! They told us the average weight gain is 1 to 2 pounds a day. We were on a 7 day cruise so that's up to 14 pounds! I could see it happening cause they had buffets 24/7 and delicious food!

We were out to sea for about 2 days then we made port at Cozumel. When we got to Cozumel we hopped on a bus and took an hour ride to the Ruins of Tulum. It was such an amazing place to visit. We had a very knowledgeable tour guide which made it very interesting and educational!

Our next port we went to was the Grand Cayman Islands!

We were able to talk a gal down about $10 on an excursion she was selling where they take you to the "Stingray City" then to another open area where you can snorkel. Thanks to Brandon we got to go for a lot cheaper then we'd all thought we would! When we went to the stingray city it was a little creepy to me to jump into water with all these 4 foot stingrays swimming around but it was a great experience! I'd do it again in a heart beat!

Lastly, we went to Ocho Rios, Jamaica. We went to Dunn's River Falls which is a large waterfall that you start at the beach then climb up. It was very slippery and dangerous so Vida and I had to sit on the sidelines and cheer our men on! we were able to stick our feet in and cool off some which was nice.
After the falls, we took a tour of Jamaica's "rainforest" called Fern Gully. This was quite the experience. Everyone on the bus was fearing for their lives cause the drive was a narrow barely two lane road with lots of sharp curves! After a while you learn to just watch out the window and pray the bus driver knew what he was doing! It was very pretty and green though!
When we got off the ship, we had about 12 hours until our flight left so we rented a "limo" service for the day. They driver said he knew a fun place to go in Florida that wasn't too far away but would help to pass the time. The place was kind of like a zoo cause it had a bunch of animal exhibits to look at but it also had an air boat that you could take a tour of the swamp. We all thought that sounded fun so we booked it. I was very wrong about this! I expected to see some wildlife but was not prepared for how close to the wildlife we'd be!

Our first sighting was an alligator off to the right of us a little ways. It was pretty big.... I'm thinking around 10-12 feet. Next we saw something kinda slithering toward us about 50 feet ahead of the boat.
As it came closer I noticed it was an alligator swimming straight at us. I was wigging out! I was thinking "Oh my gosh, this gator is going to ram us and flip over the boat! Why isn't the driver doing anything?"
The alligator never turned to move out of the way! We went right over the top of him and we could feel him hitting the bottom of the boat! I thought that was too close but that was the closest they were going to come...... hahaha was I still wrong!

We kept floating along seeing snapping turtles and a few other alligators that stayed pretty far away. Then we came to an opening in the little swamp and off in the distance we saw an alligator close to the shore doing something kinda wierd. The guide said that it was doing its mating call! It was near the end of mating season apparently! We headed toward the aroused alligator and noticed on the shore was a whole bunch of pigs or so I thought they were pigs. They actually were wild boars!

Our guide brought some food and started feeding the boars and some of the birds. He even got one of the boars to sit! I was quite impressed since they are suppose to be "wild". So while he was feeding the boars, the alligators noticed them get into the water so they came to watch right in front of our boat.

Our boat driver turned off the engine close to the shore and asked if we had the choice to jump in the water with the alligators or on the land with the boars which we would choose? Of course everyone said they'd take their chances with the boars and he said "you'd all be dead". Supposedly, alligators don't like the taste of humans and they rarely attack. Yeah I'd still take my chances on land. I can run much faster than I can swim! Our guide kept us by the shore for a little while so on our left we had wild boars and on our right side we had alligators! I of course was on the right side so I was freaking out a little! One of the alligators was touching my side of the boat. Can we say too close for comfort?! Next our guide decides to give us a little more of a thrill and takes out to where there are probably 12-15 alligators swimming in the middle of the swamp and TURNS OFF THE ENGINE! We were surrounded by gators! I was the only sane person and started freaking out saying we need to move we can't just sit here but nobody listened. Nothing happened but being surrounded was out of control!
So other than the near death experience with the alligators it was a great trip! I can't wait to go on another one!
